Instructions
3.1 STARTING OUT The main menu will appear when the program is started. It contains eight icons of which only one is active-MENU. To start your study session, click MENU and select one of the segments listed. Each lesson consists of seven activities: PRETEST, VIDEO-AUDIO, TEXT, VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR, TRANSLATION, and QUIZ. You may wish to work with the various lessons in the order that they appear.
3.2 MENU From the menu window, click on the a Topic from the list. Choose a Language (Chinese, English, or Both), Level (1+, 2, 2+, 3), and Accent. Choose a Title from the list and click OK (OK is only active when a title is selected). 3.3 SORT BY Sort all of the titles by Segment number. 3.4 ALL Display all Topics, Levels, or Accents at once.
3.5 PRETEST Displays a prelistening activity. Multiple choice prelistening questions and answers are included with each lesson to provide general hints about the contents of a particular lesson. The questions are not meant to be formal tests, rather they are designed for your own reference. 3.6 ANSWERING QUESTIONS Select an answer by clicking on the A, B, C, D boxes. In some cases, more than one answer may be selected. Your selections are highlighted in pink. To deselect an answer click on the choice again and the highlight will disappear. When you have finished the pretest, click DONE. If you wish to have your answers graded, click GRADE to see your results. Correct answers are noted with an asterisk (*) and wrong answers are marked with an 'X'. Your score is displayed at the top of the screen. You may repeat the pretest as desired. Click QUIT to close the pretest window.
3.7 VIDEO-AUDIO Access a video or audio recording of the selected news segment. A video player appears on the screen for each of the 50 video segments and the audio player appears for each of the 90 audio segments. Video and audio clips start automatically when selected. After viewing a segment, you may close the window right away or leave it open for review during your work session. NOTE: Video segments have extremely large file sizes and take time to download.
3.8 TEXT Display the Hanyu PINYIN text or the Chinese character text for the lesson segment. Use FONT to select the font (PINYIN or Chinese CHARACTER) for the segment.
3.9 SYLLABLES, WORD/PHRASE, REGULAR Choose one of these three ways to display text. Clicking on characters or words within the text will allow you to hear how it is pronounced.
3.10 PROPER NOUNS, Chinese IDIOMS, GRAMMAR, KEY SENTENCES Denotes the part of speech of the highlighted text. Deselect highlighted text by clicking on the checkbox again. You may make multiple selections at once.
3.11 SOUND Listen to a Standard Mandarin recording of the text segment. Use the audio player control bar to pause and replay the recording.
3.12 VOCAB Display a Vocabulary list for the segment. Includes all words in order of appearance within the segment. Each entry includes the Chinese character(s), the Pinyin pronounciation, the English- language definition, sample sentences in Chinese characters and Pinyin romanization, and an English language translation. Click on an entry to highlight it and display its contents. 3.13 FONT Choose to view entries in PINYIN or CHARACTER. 3.14 PLAY1, PLAY2 Hear a recording of the sample vocabulary sentences. 3.15 CANCEL Exit the window.
3.16 GRAM Display a grammar list based on the segment. It includes selected grammatical words and constructions. Each entry includes the character, Pinyin, and English-language translation. Clicking highlights the entry and displays sample sentences for selected constructions. Again, PLAY1 and PLAY2 are available to play a recording of the sample sentences; FONT views the entries in Chinese characters or in Pinyin romanization; and CANCEL exits the window.
3.17 TRANSL Display either an English-language word by word gloss of the text or a full text English-language translation. Each sentence is numbered for reference. Click on any Chinese sentence to highlight a corresponding English-language sentence.
3.18 QUIZ Test your comprehension of the segment by answering multiple choice questions. Quiz operates exactly like the pretest in terms of answering questions, being scored, and viewing your results. The only exceptions are that the order of quiz questions will change each time you repeat it. There is only one right answer per question. If your score is less than 70%, you must quit the quiz to repeat it. You may wish to review the entire segment before repeating the quiz.
