Frequently Asked Questions

Q. The applet does seem to initialize correctly, what can I do?

A. If you have Java1.3 or later installed, and you are using internet explorer, you might want to uncheck "Use Java 2 vx.xx for <applet>" option. On the tools menu of internet explorer, click internet options, and then choose advanced tab.If there is Java(Sun) list in the settings box, uncheck "Use Java 2 vx.xx for <applet>" option.

Q. Why doesn't the audio or video work?

A. The Active Movie program (Windows 95 NT) or Microsoft Media Player (Windows 98) should be able to play all of the video and sound files on this site. However, if the Active Movie program is not installed or is corrupted then you might not be able to play some of the files. You could download a movie player or an audio player to remedy this problem.

Q. I can't see the entire course in the browser window. Why do I have to scroll?

A. Check your screen resolution by right clicking on your desktop and then selecting properties. A window entitled Display Properties should come up. Click on the settings tab and make sure your display area is at least 800 by 600 pixels.

Q. I downloaded the Chinese viewer, but when I start the course, I can't see the Chinese characters or they come up garbled. Why?

A.  You may wish to check that you have set the Chinese system to the GB code.  You might also want to recheck that you have properly loaded the Chinese software.  This will be indicated in an icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If that fails trying clicking the reload or refresh button in the browser control panel.

Q.  I downloaded the Chinese viewer but when I exit the course and later come back to it, there are no Chinese fonts. Why?

A.  You must start the Chinese viewer each time BEFORE you launch the course from the browser.  Check that the Chinese system icon is visible in the right hand corner of the screen.
